3 main benefits to becoming an apprentice with FIN

As another scholastic year begins at MCAST, and students start to think about their new course and the way it will lead them to their preferred career, it is important to spare a moment to consider apprenticeships. An apprenticeship is an investment in the future employability of a student who, upon graduating, will be competing for jobs with fellow students as well as experienced workers looking for a change.

Finding a job is hard, finding a career is harder. A student needs to have sufficient credentials to be hired. Often, the Diploma would not suffice as many other students would have similar Diplomas. Being able to include vital experience gained during apprenticeships can make a potential candidate stand out from the rest of the applications.

The type of apprenticeship also matters. Being an apprentice where you do solely odd jobs such as clearing up or only observe and never participate, will not give you the necessary skills or experience which will advance your personal development.

Applying for an apprenticeship with FIN has several advantages:

1. Gain experience and practice working in various industries
FIN has been a supplier of automated components and machines in Malta for over 3 years. Our clients range drastically in industry; from waste management, to medical equipment, from food and beverage makers to carpenters. This experience will provide you as an apprentice with an unparalleled opportunity to learn how many different automated machines work.

2. Our suppliers are world leaders of automation components
Not only would you have easy access to a wide range of electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic and mechanical components for you to try and use in your daily tasks, you will also be able to get detailed information and learn more about these components directly from their manufacturers.

3. You will form part of a young and dynamic team
No two days are quite the same at FIN. The challenges are many, the pressure is high, but the satisfaction is great. Being part of a team who design, manufacture and program fully automated machines is a great experience for any apprentice.

So now is your chance to apply as an apprentice with FIN Ltd., just a few meters away from MCAST in Paola. We are currently recruiting apprentices in new and existing MCAST courses in Mechanical, Electrical & Electronics and Mechatronics subjects. Send us an email on info@finmalta.eu.

The new P-KUBE 2 safety handle

The new P-KUBE 2 safety handle, mounted in combination with the NG series RFID safety switch with block, creates an integrated protection-closing system with relating control of access to dangerous areas; such new combination makes it possible to obtain, with one single device, an access control conforming to category 4, PLe according to EN 13849-1 standard or SIL3 according to EN 62061 standard.

Therefore this integrated closing system can be applied to doors or safety perimetric-barrier protections in situations where control is requested for accessing dangerous areas around machines or plants.

The main characteristics of the new P-KUBE 2 handle are as follows:

- Simple operation: no specific action sequences are needed to open or close the door, but just one opening/closing movement.

- Solid construction: the handle has been made with solid steel brackets.

- Mounting: it can be done on both swing and sliding doors, either left or right-handed.

- Installation: it is easy to install.

- LOCK-OUT device: by means of one single operation, this lock-out device can close the centring hole found in the NG switch and can screen the RFID recognition system, therefore preventing the door from being closed mechanically and the switch from being commuted electrically, and this way avoiding any accidental closing of the guard.

- Error-proof padlockable option: the lock-out device is activated by means of a simple vertical sliding action; such movement makes the padlock holes only accessible when in fully screened position, in order to exclude any incorrect application of the padlocks.

Glow in the dark Pressure Gauges

Nobody likes having to squint or point a flashlight to read gauges in dim light or shadowy situations.

Furthermore, no one can predict when the lights will go out in even the best-lit industrial facilities — such as a power outage or an emergency involving heavy smoke. And then there's the added challenge of readability in low light: The finer the detail a worker needs to read, the greater the illumination required.

Proper lighting simply cannot reach into every corner where an instrument is installed. That's why WIKA now offers two gauge-illumination options — InSight™ and InSightGlow™ — featuring large, easy-to-read numerals that make it easier to take readings in settings such as:

• The interior of chemical and petroleum plants, including tanks and pipes.
• HVAC systems and ductwork.
• Low light plant interiors
• Areas in shadow behind complex machinery.
• Industrial processes characterized by heavy steam, which can obscure sight and readability.
• Difficult-to-reach corners of process equipment.
• Any plant interior that experiences a fire or other emergency that limits lighting.

New Options Improve Gauge Visibility in Facilities

InSightTM

The InSight option includes a retro-reflective material affixed to the dial face. At daylight, the fluorescent color absorbs non visual UV light reflecting additional light and making the gauge even more visible. At low light, the pattern of the retro-reflective material also makes the dial more visible to stand out among other regular gauges.

This easy-to-view option comes in three colors: white, fluorescent yellow, and fluorescent orange. It is currently available on industrial and process type gauges (SS wetted parts) and bimetal thermometers for both dry and liquid-filled case options, in sizes from 2 ½” to 6” in diameter.

New Options Improve Gauge Visibility in Facilities

InSight GlowTM

The InSight Glow option uses a retro-reflective, photo-luminescent dial design that illuminates the entire front of the instrument dial for an extended amount of time when exposed to a light source for as little as 10 seconds. The dial appears bright white in darkness, fog, smoke, and fire.

Like the InSight option, the Glow is also available on industrial and process type gauges (SS wetted parts) and bimetal thermometers for both dry and liquid-filled case options, in sizes from 2 ½” to 6” in diameter.

Record Data, Analyse & Improve the Efficiency with FIN Data Logging!

What is Data Logging?
Data Logging is increasingly being sought as a tool for monitoring and recording data linked to machinery operations and processes due to the rapid increase in competitiveness and lean methodology.

Software
The software integrates various aspects and devices in order to provide the user defined data logging. It reads data in real time from the electronic device of which the hardware is connected. This is done either directly or via alternate connectivity such as Ethernet/IP. Collected data can be saved in user-defined Excel files in various ways for the user to easily create production reports.

Reporting
Reporting is done in real time directly in an Excel file that has been customised according to the user and setup with date and time in a time stamp to ensure that each recorded data value is associated with date and time of acquisition.
If the formulas in the Excel file are set in advance, the production data such as defective rate, average working hours and capacity utilization rate can be calculated in real time while production data is recorded.

Production Data can be saved in daily, weekly and monthly reports and even automatically under different settings.

Applications

The applications are indeed endless, they include:

  • ·        Gas pressure, humidity & temperature recording
  • ·        Process monitoring for maintenance and troubleshooting
  • ·        Water flow and tank level monitoring
  • ·        Measure variation in light intensity
  • ·        Testing of new processes and products

Hardware
The hardware components integrate the physical machinery with the data logging electronic device for the sensory components to convey the precise information for the software to acquire the data.

Pizzato have launched their quadruple push button

Pizzato Elettrica is among the first manufacturers to propose a quadruple push-button, which is the most compact solution for piloting four independent contact blocks by means of one single device; unlike lever manipulators, the profile of the quadruple push-button does not protrude from the mounting panel, thus avoiding embossed shapes and unintentional activations, as well as obtaining an aesthetic result integrated with the EROUND line.

In order to suit the various types of application, the EROUND line quadruple push-buttons are available in two different versions: protruding or flush. It is possible to choose from among shapes, colours and symbols, so as to create a variety of combinations of push-button codes.

All push-buttons in this series have an IP67 protection degree, thus guaranteeing maximum protection even in particularly heavy-duty environmental conditions.

FIN is the official representative of Pizzato in Malta. Further details on its wide range of products and possible applications can be obtained from FIN on 27654098 or sales@finmalta.eu.

The Institute of Electrical Engineering's day out

Over the past couple of days FIN hosted a number of students from MCAST's Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering. The aim of these seminars is to give the future engineers and technicians a key insight into the technologies and products which they will be using in their careers.

A number of different topics were discussed including basic pneumatics, basic hydraulics and, of course, electrical engineering. Mr. Kevin Bonanno led the seminars and included numerous functioning demonstration components for the students to witness first hand the flexibility and functionality of Delta and Pizzato technological products, amongst others.

Students saw how an HMI can be interfaced to a temperature controller to control the heating and cooling of substances, such as water, without the need of a PLC or other ancilliary devices. They also saw servo drives in operation in an automated machine FIN is currently building. There was special interest in FIN's own icontrol and icontrol-a which were recently launched as kits for professionals and students who wish to improve their programming skills in both PLCs and HMIs. More information on the icontrol can be found on http://goo.gl/IS7nB8.

FIN company director Mr. Sergio Zammit thanked the students for attending and their interest in these seminars. Almost all of FIN's team are qualified from MCAST or other institutions and therefore we understand the needs, trouble and opportunities which students face and we are proud to have the capacity to be able to be their partners of choice. FIN also offers exclusive discounts to students, particularly does doing course projects. For more information you can contact us on education@finmalta.eu or through facebook

Retro-reflective sensors

Retro-reflective sensors

A sensor is a converter that measures a physical quantity and converts it into a signal which can be read by an electronic instrument.  Various types exist and these range from photo-electric, inductive and capacitance to ultrasonic, laser and even vision!

A retro-reflective photoelectric sensor is a device used to detect the distance, absence, or presence of an object by using a light transmitter, commonly infrared, and a photoelectric receiver. They are used extensively in industrial manufacturing. There are three different functional types:

opposed (through beam),
retro-reflective and
proximity-sensing (diffused)

A typical solution of a retro-reflective type is detecting the roll end in the packaging industry. When the roll is not present in front of the sensor, the sensor notices the absence and will alternate the output signal accordingly. This will ensure that sufficient plastic is available to continue the process, ensuring a good quality product and no scrap or damages.

FIN represents Leuze, a leading sensor manufacture in Europe, further details on sensors and possible applications can be obtained from FIN Solutions on 27654097 or projects@finmalta.eu
